Public Information Exchange
Welcome to the City of Jonesboro public information site regarding the proposed ½ cent sales tax for police and fire. The tax, if approved by voters, would be collected from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2014; at which time it will expire.
The proposed election date is August 10, 2010.
The city council is reading the ordinances establishing the election on three separate meetings; May 4, May 18 and June 1. There are two budget discussion public meetings in May scheduled for May 10 & May 17, both beginning at 6 pm in the Council Chambers at the Huntington Building. Once approved by the Council, there are four additional public meetings scheduled for each Thursday night in June (3, 10, 17, 24), each beginning at 6 pm in the Council Chambers at the Huntington Building.
The administration and city council want the public to have access to every piece of information available on the budget and this proposal. That’s why this site has been created, so that anyone unable to attend the meetings can see and hear what is presented in the public forums.
The process of public hearings and asking you, the public, to participate in this process is democracy at work. Issues involving public safety and our quality of life of this magnitude should not be left to a handful of people. But we also recognize that if we are asking you to help us make this decision and chart our path for the future, that you need to have access to the same facts and information that we have.
Please take full advantage of this website. If you have any questions or concerns that are not resolved by the things you see or hear on this site, don’t hesitate to contact the mayor’s office at 870-932-1052; or email us by clicking on this link: Email Us! You may also leave us feedback by clicking the "Feedback?" link at the bottom of the page.
Thank you.
