Sanitation

The Sanitation Department is responsible for collecting refuse from residential and commercial areas in the city. It also runs a curbside-recycling program, picks up bag grass, and leaves every week on your trash pick up day. The Sanitation Department also picks up limbs every 5 months in your area.

In the last few years, the department has upgraded the fleet, added a city-wide recycling program, diversified the fleet to add services to customers. We also chip our limbs and make mulch out of them. It hopes to expand the recycling program in the near future.

The City of Jonesboro landfill facility closed in January 2005 and is under final closure procedures. The County’s landfill has opened its facility to City Residents for disposing of unwanted items. The Legacy Landfill hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ( noon). Their phone number is 870-972-6353. The City no longer picks up any bulky waste or clean sweep items such as; but not limited to furniture, water heaters, mattresses, box springs, televisions, washers and dryers, wood, metal, fencing, refrigerators, doors and any other like items.

On a per week basis, 45 employees serve about 26,500 households. About 300 tons of residential and commercial refuse are collected, and 8-10 tons of it is recycled.

These tasks are perform using the following equipment: Volvo, Condor, Heil automated refuse trucks, 2 pacmor commercial trucks, 2 sterling knuckle boom trucks Vermeer HG525 horizontal grinder.

Free mulch is available through the sanitation department.

The city of Jonesboro is currently picking up limbs in a continuous 5-month rotation. Limbs need to be place curbside by the 1 st day of the appropriate and can be no bigger than 6 feet long and 4 inches in diameter. The limbs will be picked up sometime during the appropriate month. Holiday Schedule

Beginning in 2007, the sanitation department is trying to run all routes in 4 days so, that our employees can have the Saturday after a holiday off. There are a few Holidays that we will not be able to do this new Holiday Schedule; such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years due to the bulk amount of trash collected. Currently the Sanitation Department Holidays are: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. The Sanitation Department is currently open and running on Presidents Day, Veterans Day and Christmas Eve. We keep our Holiday schedule updated on our website and Sudden link Channel 24. Memorial Day Holiday Trash Pickup Schedule

Monday’s Trash Route will be picked up Tuesday (May 27, 2008
Tuesday’s Trash Route will be picked up normal  (May 27, 2008)
Wednesday’s Trash Route will be picked up normal (May 28, 2008)
Thursday’s Trash Route will be picked up normal (May 29, 2008)
Friday’s Trash  Route will be picked up normal (May 30, 2008)

Fourth of July Holiday Trash Pickup Schedule

All trash, recycling, yard waste pick ups will be as follows:

Monday's trash will be picked up Monday June 30, 2008
Tuesday's trash will be picked up Monday June 30, 2008
Wednesday's trash will be picked up Tuesday July 1, 2008
Thursday's trash will be picked up Wednesday July 2, 2008
Friday's trash will be picked up Thursday July 3, 2008

Sanitation Department will be closed July 4, 2008 (Friday) in observance of 4th of July Holiday.

Please note that Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday's routes will run one (1) day early.  Remember to set your can out by 6:00 a.m. on that day or the evening before pick up day.

Beginning Jan 3rd 2006 only yard waste and brush will continue to be taken to Area 2 at 1624 Strawfloor Road all other items will go to County’s Landfill located off Hwy 1 S CR 476.

Currently Lawn Care Services and Commercial Accounts do not cross scales or pay the tipping fee for unloading yard waste items. (this is subject to change at any time)

No stumps and no mixed loads will be accepted by the City (area 2) these items will need to go to the County’s Landfill located off Hwy 1 South on CR 476.

Beginning January 3, 2006 all Class IV Landfill materials will be taken to the Legacy Landfill (County’s Landfill), the large building on the left, and south of the scales.

City of Jonesboro residents will continue to be able to dispose of solid waste at no charge, with the exception of construction materials as per Jonesboro ordinance. Residents with construction material, all commercial accounts, and residents outside Jonesboro City limits must pay Legacy Landfill at the time of disposal by cash, check or debit card if a charge account has not been set up with Legacy Landfill prior to the day of disposal. City of Jonesboro Charge account customers do not automatically become charge account customers of Legacy Landfill.

 

Recycling Program

The Sanitation Department delivers Blue Recycling Bags to residents interested in Recycling. Recycling bags are for #1& #2 Plastics, Clear Glass Containers, and aluminum cans metal only. Newspapers can be recycled, they will need to be placed in a different bag such as Wal-Mart plastic bag or another department store bag or bundled with rope. Please place-recycling bags full, curbside by 6:00 a.m. on your trash pick up day. The Sanitation Department does not pick up the following items for recycling however; Hummelstein located at 105 Flint Street will accept them.

Items not picked up by the City for recycling

1. Plastic bags (Grocery, Wal-Mart, and other department stores)
2. 5 gallon plastic buckets, rinsed and handles removed
3. 5 gallon chemical drums, tripled rinsed
4. Magazines, phone books, hardback books, must be separated.

All trash must be bag, tied and placed inside the City’s container. If you have too much trash for the container the city provides, you can purchase a second container or start recycling. Sometimes recycling will cut down room in your container. Recycling cuts down on waste going into our landfills. For more information on recycling or purchasing a second container, please call the sanitation department.

If you are a commercial business and need trash services, please contact the sanitation department for dumpster prices. Contractors and residents doing clean up or remodeling may contact us for prices on roll-offs to help with large jobs.
